Sylvia Herbozo PhD

  • Associate Professor, Departments of Psychiatry and Surgery
Dr. Herbozo received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of South Florida and her B.A. in Psychology from the University of Central Florida. She completed her postdoctoral fellowship in the Program for Obesity, Weight, and Eating Research at Yale University. Prior to her current position, she was an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at Loma Linda University.

Heather Eisele PhD

  • Assistant Professor Psychiatry and Surgery Department
Dr. Eisele received her Ph.D. from the University of Missouri-St. Louis and completed her fellowship in health psychology at Loyola University Medical Center. She is a clinical health psychologist with experience in addressing coping and adjustment for a variety of health issues, including bariatric surgery/weight management, solid organ and bone marrow transplant, sleep medicine, oncology, chronic pain, neurological disorders, gastrointestinal problems, diabetes, and smoking cessation.

Alex Broekhuijse BA

  • Graduate Research Assistant/Clinical Assessor
Alex Broekhuijse is a second-year PsyD student in Clinical Psychology at Roosevelt University. Presently, Alex is on his first therapy practicum at Sinai Hospital, working in the Adult Outpatient and St. Casimir Clinic. While still developing his clinical style, Alex primarily engages in cognitive therapy with a dynamic flair, observing how attachment styles grow into the automatic thoughts that connote the emotional disorders. Additionally, Alex prioritizes cultural and trauma-informed care, ensuring that each client’s treatment plan incorporates their unique intersectional experience.

Nhi Q. Duong

Nhi Duong is a current 3rd year undergraduate student at the Loyola University of Chicago. As an undergraduate research assistant in the Body Image and Eating Behaviors Lab, she hopes to learn about how eating disorders have been affecting individuals during the pandemic and how treatment can affect the individual, their mental health, and their eating habits. She aspires to become a medical doctor and help children and adolescents in underserved communities with skills acquired in research.

Matthew F. Murray MS

  • Graduate Research Assistant, Department of Psychiatry
Matthew is a Clinical Psychology Ph.D. student at the Illinois Institute of Technology. His research primarily focuses on the intersection of sexual orientation and eating pathology as it relates to risk and maintenance factors and treatment efficacy. Matthew has served as a Graduate Research Assistant in Dr. Sylvia Herbozo’s Body Image and Eating Behaviors Lab since March of 2018 and completed a 2019-2020 clinical practicum in the bariatric surgery program at UI Health.

Alison K. Newman PhD, ABPP

Dr. Alison Newman is a clinical health psychologist. She graduated from University of Arizona after majoring in Psychology. She then moved to San Diego in 2006 where she began her graduate education in Clinical Psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology. She completed an internship in Clinical Health Psychology at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina.

Isabel C. Quinones BS

Isabel C. Quiñones is currently an extern at the University of Illinois at Chicago Bariatric Surgery Program conducting pre-surgery evaluations with patients. She is a graduate student pursuing a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). As part of the Eating Behavior Lab at IIT, under the direction of Dr. Alissa Haedt-Matt, Isabel’s research focuses on eating pathology assessment and prevention with a focus in the Latino population. Being bilingual has allowed Isabel to conduct psychotherapy in both Spanish and English at The Circle Resource Center, as well as working in the Comprehensive Eating Disorders Program at University of Michigan.

Andrea Vargas

  • Undergraduate Research Assistant
After receiving her Associate of Science at Elgin Community College Andrea transferred to the University of Illinois at Chicago. She is currently working towards her Bachelor of Arts in Applied Psychology with a minor in Urban Studies. Andrea is expected to graduate in December of 2021. After receiving her degree, she hopes to work with communities to research and remove the stigmas surrounding mental health.
