Dr. Subhash Pandey is a nationally and internationally well-known neuroscientist in the alcohol addiction field and has contributed significantly towards a better understanding of the neurobiology of alcoholism. Two striking features of alcohol addiction are the rapid onset of tolerance to the acute effects of alcohol and the development of ethanol withdrawal symptoms after cessation of protracted ethanol consumption.

Dr. Huaibo Zhang has been working in the field of epigenetics of the alcoholism using different animal models. He is actively involved in investigating different epigenetic mechanisms (e.g. histone acetylation/deacetylation, DNA methylation/demethylation) and synaptic plasticity in the development of alcohol dependence and alcoholism, which are operative in the impact of adolescent drinking on alcohol abuse at adolescent hood as well as adulthood.

Kumar Kotlo, DVM; PhD; is Research Assistant Professor  in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Illinois Chicago. Dr. Kotlo received his DVM and Master’s in Veterinary Microbiology degrees from College of Veterinary Sciences, Tirupathi, Andhra Pradesh, India and PhD from Memorial University of Newfoundland, St. John’s NF, Canada.  He has extensive experience in molecular biology and currently engaged in epitranscriptomic mechanism of alcohol addiction within CARE.

Kumar U. Kotlo

Handojo Kusumo PhD

Dr. Kusumo received PhD in biological sciences from Simon Fraser University, Canada and then received further training molecular biology. His research is focusing on epigenetic mechanisms of alcoholism, such as how histone acetylation, methylation and DNA methylation regulates behavioral phenotypes related to ethanol exposure.

Donghong (Donna) received her MS in Medical Science in 1995 from Tongji Medical University in China. She joined the lab in 2012 and currently produces viral vectors for the NIAAA-funded INIA consortium. Donna is also interested in elucidating cellular signaling mechanisms regulated by the receptor tyrosine kinase ALK.

Emir Malovic PhD

Emir Malovic received his PhD in neuroscience from Iowa State University. Broadly, he studied the neuroinflammatory mechanisms of astrocytes and microglia in Parkinson’s disease and manganism. His primary focus was in elucidating the mechanistic connections between N’6-methyladenosine (m6A) mRNA modifications and the inflammatory responses of manganese exposed astrocytes. With these new insights, Emir wishes to investigate m6A epitranscriptomic mechanisms of regulation in alcohol use disorder (AUD) for the purposes of therapeutic intervention.

Tara Cruise BA

Tara is a member of Pandey Lab, where she researches the epigenetic mechanisms of alcohol use disorder. Tara graduated from Northwestern University in 2020 with a B.A. in psychology and neuroscience. She is currently in the first year of her PsyD in clinical psychology at Adler University. She has been a member of Pandey Lab since fall 2020 and plans to continue research alongside her doctoral studies.

Himali received her PhD in Neuroscience from National Brain Research Centre, India in December 2023. She worked on cellular and molecular alterations caused by zika virus in various human brain cells. She joined Prof. Pandey’s lab in June 2024 with an intention to study the epigenetic alterations in brain caused due to alcohol use disorder (AUD).
