Healthy adults needed for study of affect regulation

Dr. Jonathan Stange at The University of Illinois at Chicago is recruiting men and women between the ages of 18-30 for a study entitled The Cognition and Affect Regulation Study (CARS) (IRB #2017-0891).

Participants must either:

  1. Have diagnosed or self-described experience with Depression, and must currently be well or in the remitted state of the illness, OR
  2. Have no personal or family history of psychiatric illness.

CARS is a purely observational study not involving any therapy or investigational drugs. CARS involves:

  1. One or two lab sessions involving a clinical interview with self-report questionnaires; and brief questions regarding personal and family physical health history. These sessions also will involve training on a week-long portion of the study that will involve completing several brief surveys on your phone each day, while wearing a vest under your clothing to measure your heart rate and breathing throughout the day, along with a wrist watch device to measure the quality of your sleep.
  2. Another lab session involving computer tasks including assessment of heart rate and breathing while watching some videos, and doing some self-report questionnaires.
  3. One functional brain scan using magnetic resonance imaging, along with a urine pregnancy screen (women).
  4. A follow-up interview and questionnaires that will take place by phone and internet one year after your first visit.

The three in-person visits take place on UIC’s west campus.  All participants should be in good physical health and either be unmedicated or on stable antidepressant or mood stabilizer treatments for 30 days.  Participants will be compensated for participation.
