Director, Alcohol Research Center (ARC) ARC logo

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the webpage of the Alcohol Research Center funded by NIAAA in the Department of Psychiatry of the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC). This center is dedicated to innovative research regarding mechanisms involved in the development of alcohol use and alcoholism. The basic and clinical research ongoing at the center will contribute to identify the neurobiological basis and the underlying cause and treatment for alcoholism which affects millions of individuals in order to alleviate the enormous social and economic burden to society.

The center is interested in developing multidisciplinary approaches aimed at characterizing molecular, cellular, genetic, and epigenetic mechanisms associated with the development of alcoholism, the consequences of these alterations on brain circuits involved in addiction, and their behavioral outcomes.

Various basic and clinical investigators from different departments within UIC, UIUC, and Jesse Brown VA medical center are involved in the alcoholism research.

Ultimately, research conducted within the center will lead to the identification of novel molecular and cellular targets, which can be used to develop a new drug therapy to treat or prevent alcoholism.
