It is my pleasure to welcome you to the webpage of the Alcohol Research Center, officially known as the Center for Alcohol Research in Epigenetics (CARE). Funded by NIAAA since 2015, CARE is housed within the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC). The center is committed to innovative research focusing on the mechanisms involved in the development and maintenance of Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD). Our ongoing basic and clinical research aims to uncover the neurobiological foundations, underlying causes, and effective treatments for AUD, which affects millions of individuals. Through this work, we seek to alleviate the significant social and economic burden that AUD places on society.

The center has developed innovative, multidisciplinary strategies to investigate the molecular, cellular, genomic, and epigenomic mechanisms underlying the development of AUD. These efforts focus on understanding how these alterations affect specific cell types within brain circuits that govern addiction and associated behavioral phenotypes. A diverse team of basic and clinical researchers from various departments at UIC, UIUC, and the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center collaborate to accelerate cutting-edge AUD research.

Ultimately, the center’s research will identify novel molecular and cellular targets that will guide the development of effective therapeutic interventions for treating or preventing alcohol use disorder.
