Gabriela Peña is a Research Specialist on the project, “Strengthening Targeted Violence Prevention in Illinois.” In her role, Gabriela provides project management and research support for the project which focuses on better understanding how different sectors across Illinois implement community-based behavioral threat assessment and management teams (BTAMTs). In her previous roles, Gabriela provided community engagement expertise for researchers at UIC and co-led a new initiative, UIC-Partnerships for Antiracist Campus Transformation within the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity and Engagement. Gabriela received both her Bachelor of Arts and Masters in Public Health with a concentration in Health Policy and Administration at the UIC School of Public Health. During her graduate studies, she researched the potential role of protective factors, which are currently absent, in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry’s Social Vulnerability Index. In the future, she hopes to combine her passion for emergency preparedness and racial equity to help provide more equitable and antiracist approaches to disaster response, mitigation, and preparedness efforts.
