My training experience while at UIC has proven invaluable in terms of case conceptualization for many of my complex psychiatric patients in terms of understanding (and educating) patients on the complexities of neurological underpinnings of mood disturbance. Within my role at NorthShore, I do have the opportunity to teach so my UIC training experience lives on in that. I am responsible for education of psychology PhD students and MD (from U. Chicago) on the neurobehavior aspects of mood disturbance. We are learning that not all depression or apathy (especially in my Parkinson's patients) is an emotional reaction to the disease/adjustment issue, but an actual symptom of the neuropathological process.
