Stevan M. Weine, MD, interviewed on WBEZ radio regarding his work with Immaculate Conception in the Brighton Park neighborhood

Dr. Stevan Weine, professor of psychiatry in the UIC College of Medicine and director of the UIC Center for Global Health, was interviewed on WBEZ radio program “Morning Shift” today regarding his work with Immaculate Conception in the Brighton Park neighborhood. Weine and partners at the church are developing a psychosocial support program for Mexican migrants who are members of the Immaculate Conception that they hope to launch this winter. Many migrants face unique challenges and stressors, especially if they are part of a mixed status family. Migrants are also more likely to face discrimination and violence, and many have symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, depression or anxiety. “Getting mental health services through the church makes sense because while many migrants don’t have access to mental health services, they do have strong ties to the church and the community it supports,” said Weine.
