Understanding Moral Injury and Its Impact on Mental Health

Victoria Gotay is a current PGY4 in the General Psychiatry Residency Program at the University of Illinois Chicago. She earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Northwestern University with a major in psychology and a minor in American history. She subsequently earned her Doctor of Medicine from UIC College of Medicine in Chicago. Her clinical interests include psychosis and trauma related psychopathology.

Objectives:

1. Define the concept of moral injury
2. Compare and contrast moral injury to PTSD
3. Discuss implications and consequences of moral injury
4. Explain how moral injury relates to concept of “burn-out”
5. Outline treatment options and preventative measures for moral injury
