Introduction

Christopher Holden Christopher Holden, MD
Program Director, Addiction Medicine Fellowship

We created the Addiction Medicine Fellowship at the University of Illinois College of Medicine to train physicians to become experts in addiction and its treatment.  The fellowship invaluably contributes to UI Health’s mission to improve the health of our patients and communities and to promote health equity.

In the United States, more people die from drug overdoses each year than have ever died in a single year from HIV, firearms, or automobile accidents.  Alcohol and tobacco use kill even more people yearly.  Chicago has been devastated by addiction, chronically and acutely.

Substance use disorders are best understood and treated as the chronic medical conditions that they are.  A new generation of experts is needed to treat patients directly and to revolutionize systems of healthcare in how they think about and treat addiction, by addressing stigma and developing better treatments and better means of delivering them.  We believe we have a program tailored to train such physicians.

Thank you for your interest in our program.  Please contact us if you have any questions or are interested in applying.
