Resident Continuity Clinics
Residents spend two half days per week two resident continuity clinics at UIC. Residents see patients in one of the four "core" clinics for two years - either psychosis, women's mental health, neuropsychiatry, or mood/anxiety. They may also spend one year rotating in recovery/substance abuse clinic, bipolar clinic, gender affirming clinic, or women's resiliency clinic. Each clinic has dedicated group supervision time for reviewing complex cases, journal articles, or directed readings.
Anchor Point Clinic is a half-day clinic that operates on Monday afternoons with two supervising attendings. Residents will be exposed to a spectrum of psychotic disorders from classic schizophrenia to more diagnostically complex cases including those complicated by catatonia. Residents will attain advanced training in medication management involving long acting injectables, clozapine, typical/atypical antipsychotics, and various augmentation strategies. Residents will also gain a greater understanding of the behavioral and psychosocial management that coincides with pharmacologic treatment of this particular patient population.
Women’s Mental Health Clinic with Dr. Danijela Stojanac, where residents have an opportunity to treat a variety of mental health problems related to hormonal changes, associated with the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, the postpartum period, and menopause transition as well as hormonal treatments while understanding the influence of sex and gender on the expression of major psychiatric illnesses and developing appreciation of the influence of gender roles on psychopathology. Residents will receive training in pharmacotherapy for pregnant and breastfeeding women, perinatal loss, substance abuse in perinatal women, trauma based disorders and the impact of maternal mental illness on the developing fetus and infant.

In the Mood and Anxiety Clinic (MAC) we see patients with a wide variety of mood and anxiety disorders (MDD, Bipolar disorder, persistent depressive disorder, GAD, panic disorder, social phobia, OCD,) as well as patients with ADHD and insomnia. We have weekly supervision where we present an interesting case and a related paper on a rotating basis. Residents will gain familiarity with the psychopharmacology of antidepressants, mood stabilizers, and anxiolytics. They will also gain mastery of managing treatment-resistant patients and familiarize themselves with augmentation strategies (lithium, thyroid, atypical antipsychotics, stimulants).

The bipolar clinic: we will focus on evidence-based pharmacological management for symptoms of bipolar disorders, which are broken down by the disease phase (acute versus maintenance) and by the polarity (mania versus depression). Each medication (antipsychotic, mood stabilizers, antidepressant, etc.) is not only individually examined for its use in bipolar disorder in this 2-by-2 (phase-by-polarity) context, but the corresponding landmark studies to support such evidence-based prescribing are further distributed and discussed.
