While playing the piano one day, Dr. Alex Leow had an idea – if she could assess her own mood and concentration by the speed and accuracy of her keystrokes on the piano, she should be able to do the same by studying the keystrokes of typing on a smartphone. Thus began a research project which will further our understanding of brain health as we age, as we experience depressive symptoms, and may even help us better understand early signs of Alzheimer’s Disease. Dr Alex Leow is the cofounder of KeyWise AI and the CoNECt lab at UIC, a research team devoted to the study of the human brain using many multidisciplinary approaches. She is the lead of BiAffect, the first scientific study that seeks to turn smartphones into “brain fitness trackers” This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
