Overview

During the first year of training (PGY-1), emphasizes psychiatric phenomenology, diagnosis, treatment and disposition of patients. This is primarily an inpatient year, with rotations on the adult inpatient units, child/adolescent services, and the consultation-liaison service.emphasis is on attaining competency in evaluative, diagnostic, and treatment skills. The year is divided into two six-month blocks. One block consists of primary care and neurology rotations. The other block is composed of inpatient, emergency psychiatry, and consult-liaison rotations.

The second year (PGY-2), emphasizes psychiatric phenomenology, diagnosis, treatment and disposition of patients. This is primarily an inpatient year, with rotations on the adult inpatient unit, child/adolescent services, and the consultation-liaison service.

The third year (PGY-3) is the longitudinal ambulatory care experience. Morning outpatient experiences include addictions, geriatric, community psychiatry, and electives. Longitudinal psychotherapy and the opportunity for subspecialty clinic experiences occur in the afternoons.

The fourth year (PGY-4) allows for significant opportunity to tailor the experience to an individual resident’s interests. Typical PGY4 experiences include an inpatient senior rotation, electroconvulsive therapy, and collaborative care. PGY4s have multiple opportunities for developing leadership and educational skills, including as chief residents, giving Grand Rounds, and leading educational Problem Based Learning sessions.
