An Invitation to the UIC Department of Psychiatry
Thank you for your interest in our residency training program!
The Department of Psychiatry at UIC (UIC Psychiatry) is nationally renowned in academic psychiatry and offers an excellent, well-rounded residency program located in one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world. The training program is well-established and structured and provides access to a diverse clinical population in a major urban setting. The department has a large inpatient presence in the main University Hospital and active clinical and teaching programs in both hospital-based and community-based ambulatory settings. Our faculty is dedicated to teaching and mentorship and provides an excellent environment for trainees to learn and grow professionally and personally.
The UIC Department of Psychiatry is organized into multiple subspecialty programs. These include nationally recognized programs in Child Psychiatry, Mood and Anxiety Disorders, Neuropsychiatry, Psychotic Disorders, and Women's Mental Health. The department is also home to the Institute for Juvenile Research, the Psychiatric Institute and eight centers of excellence. Faculty members from these various programs and centers are actively involved in the department's teaching programs by providing clinical teaching, didactics and research mentorship. Whether you are interested in providing care to the under-served, or in neuronal function and laboratory research or in the psychological impact of trauma and genocide, you will find faculty members and mentors eager to work with you and to enrich your experience.
The department is currently ranked 24th in the nation in NIH funding and first in Chicago. We are a department committed to the advancement of knowledge and believe that research and education help us better understand and more effectively manage mental illness and fight the stigma associated with mental disorders. We also believe that it is important to nurture and provide opportunities for research to trainees early in their careers, so that they may develop into productive physician investigators over their professional lives. We have an active research track for residents with an interest in research that enables them to work towards a Master’s Degree in a discipline of their choosing, such as neuroscience, epidemiology, and health services and interventions research. We have committed resources to facilitate this initiative and have faculty members with strong backgrounds and interest in this endeavor.
We continue our long history of commitment to outstanding research, clinical services, and educational programming focused on the major psychiatric disorders. We strive to advance new, applicable knowledge in basic science and clinical neuroscience, prevention, and the social and clinical areas that will benefit people with serious mental illnesses, their families and communities. You will find the environment rich and intellectually challenging and supportive at the same time. Perhaps more importantly, you will find our trainees to be a bright, happy and hard working group with a lot to offer incoming residents in multiple clinical and social domains.
It is an exciting time to be a trainee in the UIC Department of Psychiatry. Our accomplishments are significant and serve as a preamble for future growth. I am honored to lead the legacy that is the UIC Department of Psychiatry. I invite you to come and visit with us and experience the dynamic energy and work of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Illinois.
