of Psychiatry The Department of Psychiatry at the University of Illinois at Chicago has a distinguished history, a challenging present, and an exciting future. The internet, with its instantaneous access to information and knowledge on a world-wide basis, presents a dynamic opportunity to expand and improve communication, the sharing of information and movement of data. This future will require decisive leadership to grasp and realize the opportunities that are presented. Psychiatry, like all medical professions, changes and adapts to challenge. The internet provides the perfect new milieu for education, delivery of cutting edge treatment modalities and dissemination of research findings. It is an exciting time for Psychiatry in the age of information technology. The Department's website is designed to present the different functional areas in the Department: Education, Clinical Service, Research, Institutes, and Faculty. The Department is dedicated to provide quality clinical services to a wide variety of individuals. On the website there is an extensive list of clinical services across seven clinical divisions: Child, Neurobehavior, Mood and Anxiety Disorders, Psychosis, and Women. The Department is conducting innovative research in Child Prevention/Intervention, Neuroscience and Schizophrenia, and Mental Health Services Research. The Center on Mental Health Services Research and Policy is at the forefront of research and education on individuals with psychiatric disabilities. Furthermore, the Project on Genocide and Witnessing extends our span globally to the turmoil in Bosnia and the effects of witnessing genocide and the impact on the survivors. The Department of Psychiatry has two basic missions: 1) To educate, train, deliver cutting edge services and add new knowledge in basic science, treatment, service delivery and public policy for the major psychiatric disorders and of biopsychosocial contributions to major medical illnesses; and 2) To partner with community, city, and state health and welfare programs and consumer organizations to promote well-being and prevent major psychosocial societal problems such as violence, drug abuse and family dysfunction.
