Living with Psychiatric Disability and
HIV/AIDS: Mental Health Consumers Speak for Themselves

Purpose:
This qualitative study examined the experiences and key issues faced by mental health consumers who are HIV positive and/or living with AIDS.
Through participatory action research, mental health consumers were involved in the development of a series of research questions and survey instruments, facilitation of focus groups, recruitment of consumers for
interviews, collection of data, and preparation of a summary report. This report details the needs, experiences, and recommendations of HIV+ mental health consumers around the country. Chapters in the
report describe the interplay between the two disabilities of mental illness and AIDS, factors involved in disclosure of both disabilities in the workplace, discrimination and unfair treatment, legal issues, unmet
service needs, and policy recommendations for both the HIV and psychiatric disability fields. A section on readings and resources for consumers and service providers also is included.
