    60+ Media Quote Astrachan-Fletcher on Prozac's Efficacy in Treating Anorexia
    Ellen Astrachan-Fletcher , Ph.D., clinical psychologist and director of the Eating Disorders Clinic at UIC, was quoted in an Associated Press story about a JAMA study that suggests the practice of prescribing the antidepressant Prozac does not substantially benefit patients with anorexia.     IJR Families & Communities Research Group Receives Grant, Publishes Paper
    The IJR Families and Communities Research Group received notice of a grant award last week.  The grant is for $259,544 (total costs) over two years to analyze data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health.  The title of the project is “Family and Peer Influences on Adolescent Sexual Behavior,” David Henry, Ph.D., is PI; co-investigators are Michael Schoeny, Ph.D., and Daneen Deptula, Ph.D. of Eastern Illinois University.  Dr. Deptula began working with the group when she was a psychology intern at IJR. The FCRG also received notice last week that an article, “Peer Selection and Socialization Effects on Adolescent Intercourse Without a Condom and Attitudes About the Costs of Sex,” was accepted for publication by Child Development .  Authors are Drs. Henry, Schoeny, and Deptula. The grant and the article are part of the Peer Influences on HIV/STD Risk project of the FCRG at IJR.

    Stein et al Contract for Clinical Trial & Investigator Initiated Protocol on ADHD
    Mark Stein , Ph.D.; Elizabeth Charney , M.D.; Radmila Manev , M.D; Bennett Leventhal , M.D; Fedra Najar , M.D; and Nichole White , M.D., recently received a $320,000 clinical trial to evaluate the safety and efficacy of Modafanil in adults with ADHD. Questions or patient referrals for screening are welcome at 312-996-2389.
    Drs Stein, Charney, Ed Cook, and Leventhal also recently received approval for an Investigator Initiated Protocol, “Sleep and Tolerability of Dexmethylphenidate versus Amphetamine.” This $500,000 contract will begin this summer in 10-17 year olds with ADHD, and will also examine genetic predictors of response.
    In separate news, Dr. Stein last week presented a poster, “Long-Acting Stimulants and Mood Symptoms: Parent and Adolescent Perspectives” at the NIMH-sponsored
    New Clinical Drug Evaluation Unit Meeting in Boca Raton , Florida .

    Channel 2 Interviews Dove for Profile of South Side Child Molestation Suspect
    CBS Channel 2 News at 5 last Tuesday interviewed Henry Dove, M.D., regarding the psychological profile of a man accused of molesting two young girls at a South Side thrift store.

    Plan to Attend the Department Welcome Picnic Set for July 12, 4:30-7 pm
    Everyone in the Department is invited to attend the Department of Psychiatry Welcome Picnic, 2006, on Wednesday, July 12 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. The picnic will be at the PI Park, adjacent to and behind the south side of the Psychiatric Institute at 1601 W. Taylor Street . Free food and fun will be available at this annual event for UIC Department of Psychiatry colleagues, new trainees, faculty, staff, fellows, students, departmental employees, and families.
