Mason, C Hill Receive Campus Research Board Grants
Sally Mason , Ph.D., LCSW, and Carri Hill , Ph.D., received one-year Campus Research Board grants. Dr. Mason's program, “ Stigma as a risk factor among HIV-affected adolescents,” will explore the impact of HIV- associated stigma among inner-city African American adolescents who are not infected themselves but are affected by their mother's HIV disease. This study will explore the types of HIV-associated stigma experienced by adolescents and the interplay among HIV-associated stigma, adolescent adverse outcomes (mental health, sexual risk, substance abuse), and key maternal and adolescent factors, e.g. communication & social support, that may explain stigma.

Dr. Hill's program, “Validation of a developmentally and ecologically sensitive parent–child intervention for preschool behavior problems,” will involve collecting preliminary validation data on an intervention developed in the preschool program for treating disruptive preschoolers from low-income environments. In separate news, Dr. Hill, a psychologist in the IJR Developmental Mechanisms Group, published an article, “Mother's Childrearing History and Current Parenting: Patterns of association and the moderating role of current life stress” in the summer 2006 issue of Journal of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology .
