The Harvard Health Letter's annual list of the nation's top 10 health stories of 2006 includes the Institute of Medicine 's report calling for FDA reform of the drug approval process. Robert Gibbons , Ph.D., served on the special panel of IOM experts who compiled the report. A major the me of the report is recognition that the approval process will never ferret out all problems with a drug, so the agency needs tough, new powers to better monitor drugs after the y are on the market. The report says that more funding for the FDA should come from government funds ra the r than user fees. The committee also proposed using a special symbol on new drugs to let consumers know that those drugs lack a track record.
Search Committee Members to Meet with Faculty Thurs. Dec. 14
Faculty members are urged to attend a faculty-only meeting with the chair and all members of the search committee that soon will be vetting candidates for the position of department head. The meeting will be this Thurs., Dec. 14, 9 – 10 a.m. , in PI 305W. Dr. Dove has urged faculty members to come prepared to articulate the ir questions and concerns to the committee. Light refreshments will be offered.
