NIH Awards RO1 to Donenberg’s Healthy Youths Program.
The Healthy Youths Program, directed by Geri Donenberg, Ph.D, recently received a new R01 grant in collaboration with Larry Oullett, PhD, in the School of Public Health. Dr. Donenberg will be Co-I with a significant budget allocation for the work. Activities will involve hiring, training, and supervising interviewers to conduct a psychiatric interview with young intravenous drug users. The grant is the seventh federal grant awarded to the Healthy Youths Program, which also recently received another $100,000 from the State of Illinois for the HIV prevention center. The new funding will help launch the group’s center-focused work.
Scientific American Mind Quotes Grayson on Epigenetic Causes of Schizophrenia
Dennis Grayson, Ph.D., is quoted in an article, “Determining Nature vs. Nurture: Molecular Evidence is Finally Emerging to Inform the Long-Standing Debate,” in the current issue of Scientific American Mind. The article notes that Dr. Grayson, Alessandro Guidotti, M.D., and Erminio Costa, M.D., conducted postmortem studies of people with schizophrenia and found methyl groups attached to the reelin gene, which helps form connections between neurons.
ABC Channel 7 Interviews Naylor on Pennsylvania School Shooting
Michael Naylor , M.D., did a live interview Oct. 2 on ABC Channel 7 Evening News to discuss the Pennsylvania school shooting and explain how parents might talk to their children about violent and frightening events. Tues. Oct. 3 Daily Herald included a Q & A with Dr. Naylor discussing how to talk to children and teens about violence in schools.

S Pandey Presents at International Society for Biomedical Research on Alcoholism
Subhash Pandey , Ph.D., recently gave an invited talk in a symposium, "Regulation of gene transcription in alcohol dependence and neurotoxicity," at the World Congress on Alcohol Research, hosted by the International Society for Biomedical Research on Alcoholism, in Sydney, Australia. Dr. Pandey’s presentation was entitled “The critical role of CREB phosphorylation in the central nucleus of amygdala in alcohol addiction.” Dr. Pandey co-chaired the symposium with Dr. Georgy Bakalkin, Karolinska Insitute, Sweden.
Stein, Cook, Colleagues Present Poster at 7th International ADHD Genetics Meeting Mark Stein, Ph.D., Ed Cook, M.D., and colleagues presented a poster at the 7th International ADHD Molecular Genetics Network Meeting in Brussels, Belgium on Oct 9: Winer, E.S.., Stein, MA, Kim, S & Cook, EH. DAT1 and DrD4 Polymorphisms and IQ in CHildren with ADHD: A Replication of Mill et al (2006). Dr. Stein also co-chaired the Pharmacogenetics Working Group and gave a special lecture to young investigators on ADHD Pharmacogenetics.
Graduate RA’s Zhou & Zhang Invited to Speak at Text Retrieval Conference Two graduate research assistants, Wei Zhou and Wei Zhang, were invited to speak at the upcoming Text Retrieval Conference sponsored by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, reflecting their outstanding performances in two separate national competitions. Wei Zhou entered the Genomics track, whereas Wei Zhang participated in the Blog track. Both students are mentored by Prof. Clement Yu (Department of Computer Science), and conduct research with Neil Smalheiser, M.D., Ph.D., and Vetle Torvik , Ph.D., as part of the Arrowsmith Project. They will present on Nov. 15 in Gaithersburg, MD.
