    Pandey Receives RO1 Grant on Epigenetic Mechanisms in Alcohol Dependence Subhash Pandey , Ph.D., last week received a new four-year RO1 grant entitled "Brain epigenetic mechanisms in alcohol dependence," with a total budget of about $1 million. Dr. Pandey and his group will investigate the various epigenetic mechanisms that may contribute to changes in neural plasticity associated with the process of alcohol dependence.

    National Geographic Crew to Film Lightning Injury Documentary this Week
    Neil Pliskin , Ph.D., and several other UIC faculty members tomorrow and Wednesday will be involved in a special National Geographic documentary film shoot called “Struck by Lightning. In addition to one-on-one interviews with Dr. Pliskin and several lightning injury patients, the film crew has scheduled shoots in Pediatrics, Emergency Medicine, and fMRI.

    Event Educates about Depression, Bipolar Disorder in Latinos
    Comedian Alex Ortiz performed Sept. 30 at a free event focused on depression and bipolar disorder in Latinos. After the performance at Student Center East, there was a presentation and Q&A with a panel of mental health experts, focusing on the Latino population living with depression or bipolar disorder. The Hispanic Heritage Month event was sponsored by the UIC Center on Mental Health Services Research and Policy, and presented by the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance.     J Cook to Receive Lilly Award for Advancing Customized Employment Program
    Judith Cook , Ph.D., is one of three partners who will receive an “On the Job Award” from Eli Lilly Award and Company. This award honors the Advancing Customized Employment (ACE) Program, which helps people with psychiatric disabilities secure and maintain jobs in the community. The On the Job Award recognizes those who help individuals in their care develop skills to find a meaningful job and the determination to keep it. Dr. Cook and her partners, the Chicago Workforce Board, and Thresholds of Chicago, will receive the award in Indianapolis at the 2006 Lilly Reintegration Awards ceremony this Friday October 6 at the Hilton Indianapolis. Dr. Cook is PI and author of a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor, which funds the ACE Project. Since 1996, the Lilly Reintegration Awards program has recognized individuals, groups and initiatives that improve the lives of people with mental illness.     Sripada, Colleagues to Present Papers at IEEE Conference in Taiwan
    Bhaskar Sripada, M.D., will present two papers at the 2006 IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Oct. 8-11, at The Grand Hotel, Taipei , Taiwan . The papers are “Active Systems Observations and Medical Information: A Single Case Study of Measurement of Personal and Empathic Processes,” by Dr. Sripada and second author Thomas Jobe , M.D.; and “How to Teach Medical Concepts Using Animations by Designing Multimedia Instructional Application,” by first author Usha Reddy, Dr. Sripada, and Toshni Kulkarni.
