Tolan Receives APA Presidential Award of Distinction, Vision to Action Award
Patrick Tolan,
Ph.D., received a Presidential Award of Distinction from the American Psychological Association at the annual meetings of the APA in Boston this month. This award was presented to Dr. Tolan at one of several invited addresses he gave at the meetings. He was honored for merging concepts of psychology, sociology, and criminology to create an influential, multi-level developmental model of the causes of violence. His model describes the integrated and interacting roles of individual, family, peer and neighborhood and community variables in increasing risk for violence. Dr. Tolan has played a pivotal role in groundbreaking multi-site studies of violence prevention in inner city youth based on the view that interventions must focus on each and all levels to be successful.
In separate news, Dr. Tolan received the “Vision to Action” award from the Illinois Center for Violence Prevention at their 6th annual Art of Peace dinner on September 18. Dr. Tolan was honored for his “extraordinary contribution to the field of violence prevention, including innovation, national leadership and advancing scientific understanding of causes and prevention of violence in Illinois and across the globe.”
