Tolan Receives Star of Science Award from Children’s Brain Research Foundation
At a gala dinner Wed Sept 5, Patrick Tolan, Ph.D., received the Children's Brain Research Foundation's Star of Science Award for years of careful work and dedication to understanding, preventing and treating children's mental disorders. At the same dinner, Justice Ann Burke of the Illinois Supreme Court, received the Star of Leadership Award for her decades of work with children, including her major role in the founding of the Special Olympics. Washington Post Quotes Gibbons on Black Box Warning on Anti-Depressants
Robert Gibbons, Ph.D., was quoted last week in a front page Washington Post article on his study on how the black box warning on anti-depressants might actually increase the risk of youth suicide. The study appears in the September issue of the American Journal of Psychiatry. NSF Funds Fall to Study Mathematical Models of Intracellular Processes, Memory
Chris Fall, Ph.D. recently received a three-year research grant from the National Science Foundation to create and study mathematical models of intracellular signaling in prefrontal cortical neurons. The goal is to understand how intracellular processes might contribute to working memory and how these systems might be broken in diseases such as schizophrenia.

    Policies & Procedures
Over the next few months we will be providing and implementing Department Electronic, Network, Computing Policies and Procedures. All Department Policies and Procedures will be reviewed and endorsed by the Information Technology Steering Committee (ITSC) prior to presenting to the Department.

Because of our relationship to UIC and College of Medicine there are some Policies we automatically inherit. Two such policies:

    1. Information Security Policy - The University of Illinois
    2. University Guidelines on the Sale, Donation, or Transfer of Computer Hard Drives and Other Magnetic Media

These policies can be found on our web site using the following link: https://intranet.psych.uic.edu/is/ you will be required to “log-in” to access these policies.

We will make both of these policies (along with others forth coming) a part of new employee orientation, but to those of us already in the system we are asking that each of you please take the time to read these policies.

If you have any questions concerning any policy or procedure please let me know, thank you.
