NYT, Newsweek Quote Gibbons on FDA ‘Black Box’ Warning on SSRI Rx for Teens
    Robert Gibbons
, Ph.D., director of the Center for Health Statistics, was quoted in a New York Times article about his recent study that found antidepressants lower the risk of suicide attempt in adults with depression, a finding that questions the FDA's recent decision to add a "black box" warning on antidepressant drugs for young adults. The article is available at:
    http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/10/health/psychology/10depre.html?_r=1& adxnnl=1&oref=slogin&adxnnlx=1184077071-vw43uaOwFtLenT//nfF7Tw

Newsweek also quotes Dr. Gibbons in an article, “Trouble in a ‘Black Box’: Did an effort to reduce teen suicide backfire?” page 48, in the July 16 edition. The article notes a likely correlation between a 52% drop in pediatric SSRI prescriptions between 2003 and 2005, and an 18% increase in teen suicides from 2003 to 2004, the latest year for which data are available.

S Pandey Chairs Symposium at Research Society on Alcoholism Meeting
    Subhash Pandey
, Ph.D., organized and chaired a symposium titled “Signaling mechanisms in alcohol dependence and neurotoxicity” at the 30th scientific meeting of the Research Society on Alcoholism in Chicago July 7 through 11, 2007. At the symposium, Dr. Pandey gave a talk titled “BDNF signaling and dendritic spines in the central amygdala: a role in alcohol dependence.” He also chaired a paper session entitled “Growth factors,MAP kinase and ethanol’s actions.”

    Policies & Procedures
Over the next few months we will be providing and implementing Department Electronic, Network, Computing Policies and Procedures. All Department Policies and Procedures will be reviewed and endorsed by the Information Technology Steering Committee (ITSC) prior to presenting to the Department.

Because of our relationship to UIC and College of Medicine there are some Policies we automatically inherit. Two such policies:

    1. Information Security Policy - The University of Illinois
    2. University Guidelines on the Sale, Donation, or Transfer of Computer Hard Drives and Other Magnetic Media

These policies can be found on our web site using the following link: https://intranet.psych.uic.edu/is/ you will be required to “log-in” to access these policies.

We will make both of these policies (along with others forth coming) a part of new employee orientation, but to those of us already in the system we are asking that each of you please take the time to read these policies.

If you have any questions concerning any policy or procedure please let me know, thank you.
