Atkins & Colleagues Secure 5-Year NIMH Developing Center Grant
Marc Atkins, Ph.D., and UIC colleagues Stacy Frazier, Ph.D.; David Henry, Ph.D.; Robert Gibbons, Ph.D.; Carl Bell, M.D.; and Johnny Williamson, M.D., received a 5-year developing center grant from the NIMH. The “Center for the Study of Schools as a Context for Urban Children's Mental Health,” is a virtual center, based at the Institute for Juvenile Research, linking research programs of leading investigators in education and mental health services research at New York University, the University of Virginia, University of Tennessee, and the Medical University of South Carolina, along with leading programs in mental health policy and practice (Community Mental Health Council) and biostatistics (University of Illinois Chicago). The center will promote multidisciplinary research on the influences and interactions of specific contextual factors that affect outcomes of schooling for youth in urban poverty.

Cook & Colleagues Study New Mental Health Services Financing Mechanism
Judith Cook, Ph.D. and co-authors Carolyn Russell, Ph.D.; Dennis Grey, B.A.; and Jessica Jonikas, M.A. published an article in the current issue of Psychiatric Services, entitled “A Self-Directed Care Model for Mental Health Recovery.” They studied an alternative financing mechanism for community mental health services in which patients were given control over public funds to purchase services and supports. They found that, compared with the year before enrollment, in the year after clients spent significantly less time in psychiatric inpatient and criminal justice settings and showed significantly better functioning.

Psychiatry Department Welcome Picnic Tuesday July 1
The Psychiatry Department Welcome Picnic will be Tuesday, July 1, 4:30-7 p.m., at PI Park, behind PI, 1601 W. Taylor Street. Faculty, staff, students, trainees, fellows and their families are welcome to attend the free event. Anyone interested in volunteering to help with the picnic is asked to contact George Manning, at 5-1680 or gmanning@uic.edu.

    Policies & Procedures
Over the next few months we will be providing and implementing Department Electronic, Network, Computing Policies and Procedures. All Department Policies and Procedures will be reviewed and endorsed by the Information Technology Steering Committee (ITSC) prior to presenting to the Department.

Because of our relationship to UIC and College of Medicine there are some Policies we automatically inherit. Two such policies:

    1. Information Security Policy - The University of Illinois
    2. University Guidelines on the Sale, Donation, or Transfer of Computer Hard Drives and Other Magnetic Media

These policies can be found on our web site using the following link: https://intranet.psych.uic.edu/is/ you will be required to “log-in” to access these policies.

We will make both of these policies (along with others forth coming) a part of new employee orientation, but to those of us already in the system we are asking that each of you please take the time to read these policies.

If you have any questions concerning any policy or procedure please contact Lloyd Keith, thank you.
