    Carbray Receives UIC’s 2008 Excellence in Nursing Award
    Julie Carbray, PhD, APN, BC, Administrative director and advanced practice nurse in pediatric mood disorders clinic at IJR recently won the 2008 Excellence in Nursing Award from the UIC College of Nursing. The competitive award was established in memory of Karen Gousman. Dr. Carbray has gained national recognition for her achievements in designing new treatments with families of children and adolescents with mental illness, particularly mood disorders, and in psychopharmacology in mental health nursing.

    Several faculty and staff in the department’s Psychotic Disorders Program presented at the recent American Psychiatric Association 161st Annual meeting in Washington, D.C:

    S Pandey Presents NIAAA Grand Rounds on Alcoholism and Anxiety
    Subhash Pandey, Ph.D., gave grand rounds last week at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism in Bethesda, MD. The title of his seminar was “Alcoholism and Anxiety: From signaling to Epigenetic Mechanisms.”

    Gibbons Appointed to VA’s Experts Panel to Help Reduce Veterans’ Suicides
    Robert Gibbons, Ph.D., last week was chosen to serve on a nine-member panel of nationally renowned experts in public health, research and treatment programs specializing in suicide prevention. Appointed by Secretary of Veterans Affairs Dr. James B. Peake, the expert panel will be one of two special groups making recommendations on how the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) can improve its programs in suicide prevention, research, and education. The panel of experts will make recommendations, and provide professional opinion, interpretation, and conclusions on information and data to a “Blue Ribbon Work Group.” That group will comprise government experts in various suicide prevention and education programs in agencies including the Department of Defense, the Centers for Disease Control, the National Institute of Health, and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.     May 28 Clinical Case Conference to be Held in COM Research Building
    Please be advised that the May 28 Clinical Case Conference from 1 – 2 p.m., “Buddhism and Mental Health: Theory & Practice,” presented by Larry Masi, MD, and moderated by Prakash Desai, MD, will be in a new location, the College of Medicine Research Building (CMRB) Auditorium, Room 1020, First Floor, 907 S. Wolcott Street.

    Policies & Procedures
    Over the next few months we will be providing and implementing Department Electronic, Network, Computing Policies and Procedures. All Department Policies and Procedures will be reviewed and endorsed by the Information Technology Steering Committee (ITSC) prior to presenting to the Department.

    Because of our relationship to UIC and College of Medicine there are some Policies we automatically inherit. Two such policies:

    1. Information Security Policy - The University of Illinois
    2. University Guidelines on the Sale, Donation, or Transfer of Computer Hard Drives and Other Magnetic Media

    These policies can be found on our web site using the following link: https://intranet.psych.uic.edu/is/ you will be required to “log-in” to access these policies.

    We will make both of these policies (along with others forth coming) a part of new employee orientation, but to those of us already in the system we are asking that each of you please take the time to read these policies.
