Graduate Student Sundermann Receives $25,000 MSINAD Scholar Grant
Graduate student Erin Sundermann, who works in the lab of Pauline Maki, Ph.D., was awarded a Mount Sinai Summer Institute for NeuroAIDS Disparities (MSINAD) 2008 scholar grant. The award will sponsor Ms. Sundermann’s attendance at MSINAD in New York City June 23rd to August 1, and provide her with $25,000 to conduct her research after completing the summer program. Ms. Sundermann also recently received an NIH Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award for Individual Predoctoral Fellow (F31) for her research project “Genetic Predictors of Cognition in HIV + Women.” Dr. Maki is Ms. Sundermann’s research mentor on this project.

Bell Lauds Research on Facial Recognition In-Group Advantage in Schizophrenia
The May issue of the American Journal of Psychiatry features an editorial by Carl Bell, M.D., applauding a study reported in the same edition that identified a confound in previous literature that appeared to support an emotion recognition advantage of Caucasians with schizophrenia over African Americans with schizophrenia. Research led by Amy Pinkham, Ph.D., revealed that previous studies in this area included images of Caucasian faces only. Pinkham et al conducted a meta-analysis of culture and emotion perception and found an in-group advantage when the perceiver is the same race as the person expressing the emotion. Dr. Bell’s editorial notes that results of the Pinkham study will likely be extrapolated beyond psychological testing. For example, in courts of law, mental status examinations might be questioned if a witness’ culture, race or ethnicity differ from an alleged criminal’s.

Miller to Speak at June 1 Conference on Mental Health Issues of Women, Girls
Laura Miller, M.D., will be one of three panelists at a June 1 conference entitled “Women’s Voices: Understanding Mental Health Issues of Women and Girls,” sponsored by the Naomi Ruth Cohen foundation. Policies & Procedures
Over the next few months we will be providing and implementing Department Electronic, Network, Computing Policies and Procedures. All Department Policies and Procedures will be reviewed and endorsed by the Information Technology Steering Committee (ITSC) prior to presenting to the Department.

Because of our relationship to UIC and College of Medicine there are some Policies we automatically inherit. Two such policies:

    1. Information Security Policy - The University of Illinois
    2. University Guidelines on the Sale, Donation, or Transfer of Computer Hard Drives and Other Magnetic Media

These policies can be found on our web site using the following link: https://intranet.psych.uic.edu/is/ you will be required to “log-in” to access these policies.

We will make both of these policies (along with others forth coming) a part of new employee orientation, but to those of us already in the system we are asking that each of you please take the time to read these policies.

If you have any questions concerning any policy or procedure please contact Lloyd Keith, thank you.
