    Mason Named Great Cities Institute Faculty Scholar; to Study ‘Courtesy Stigma’ Sally Mason, Ph.D., LCSW, was selected as a Great Cities Institute Faculty Scholar for the academic year 2007-2008. Dr. Mason’s project is titled “Conceptualizing ‘courtesy’ stigma among African-American adolescents whose mothers have HIV/AIDS.” “Courtesy” stigma, sometimes referred to as associated stigma, is the experience of stigma by a secondary target. For example, a mother with HIV is the primary target; how do her children who are not infected experience stigma through her stigmatizing condition, i.e., courtesy stigma. And by extension, how does courtesy stigma affect their risk for mental illness, sutbstance abuse, pregnancy/STDs. The Campus Research Board has also funded Dr. Mason to study this topic.


    Rahlf to Join International Health Care Executive Delegation to South Africa in May Andrea Rahlf, MA, C.M.P.E., has been invited to join an international delegation of health care executives, jointly sponsored by the American College of Medical Practice Executives and People to People Ambassador Programs. The group will travel to South Africa May 14-24, 2007. The delegation will tour hospitals and clinics and meet with groups of healthcare providers in Johannesburg and Cape Town. Like the U.S., South Africa is experiencing a dearth of health care professionals, despite steady increases in the number of hospitals and clinics. The delegation will meet with health leaders from different South African organizations to learn what they are doing to address the problem. Delegates will also discuss and explore delivery of care, especially for patients with AIDS; infectious disease surveillance and control; measurements of quality care; access to care issues; and women’s and maternal-child health.

    The delegation will be led by Susan Turney, M.D., chair of the Board of Directors of the Medical Group Management Association and CEO and executive vice president of the Wisconsin Medical Society.


    Virginia Tech Shooting: NBC Ch. 5 Interviews Tolan on Violence Patrick Tolan, Ph.D., appeared live on NBC Channel 5 News at 4:30 p.m., Monday, April 16, to discuss causes and prevention of violent behavior in the aftermath of the deadly shooting incident that took place earlier today at Virginia Tech.


    Dwivedi Receives NARSAD Grant to Study Apoptosis in Depression Yogesh Dwivedi, Ph.D., received a 2-year NARSAD Grant Award to study regulation and relevance of apoptosis in depression. The study, which will begin July 1, will utilize human postmortem brain to identify cell survival regulatory proteins, apoptotic mechanisms and its relevance to major depression.


    WTTW Channel 11 Chicago Tonight Airs Interview with E Cook on Autism Edwin Cook, M.D., appeared on WTTW Channel 11's “Chicago Tonight” program last Friday evening to discuss autism.


    Bell et al: Patient Ethnicity Influences Diagnostic, Clinical Traits in Clinical Reports Carl Bell, M.D., is co-author of a recently published article, “Race/Ethnicity Among Psychiatric Patients: Variations in Diagnostic and Clinical Characteristics Reported by Practicing Clinicians,” in Focus: the Journal of Lifelong Learning in Psychiatry. The article confirms the problems in diagnosis in African American and other minorities.
