Grayson to Present Keystone Symposium on Epigenetics in Schizophrenia
On Saturday, April 14, Dennis Grayson, Ph.D., will give an invited presentation at the Keystone Symposia in Breckenridge, CO. Dr. Grayson will present “Methylation and the Regulation of Reelin and GAD67 in Schizophrenia,” as part of a meeting on Epigenetics and Disease.
UIC Center on Responses to Catastrophes Hosts Lecture on Terrorism
Walter Reich, M.D., will give an invited lecture, “Does Terrorism Have Root Causes?” on Wed., April 25, 3 to 4:30 p.m., in Conference Room A of the UIC Student Services Building. Dr. Reich, a friend and colleague of the late Boris Astrachan, M.D.,
is Yitzhak Rabin Memorial Professor of International Affairs, Ethics and Human Behavior, and Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at The George Washington University. He is a Senior Scholar at the Woodrow Wilson Center, a former Director of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, and author of numerous publications on the Holocaust, genocide, terrorism, human rights, national memory, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict; psychiatry, medical ethics and national and international affairs.
Dr. Reich’s lecture is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Criminal Justice; the UIC International Center on Responses to Catastrophes; the Center for Research in Law and Justice; the Legal Interest Group of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and the UIC Departments of Political Science, Jewish Studies, and International Studies.
Roybal Health Promotion Grant Applications Due April 23
The Midwest Roybal Center for Health Promotion and Behavior Change is accepting pilot grant applications and doctoral student grant applications through April 23. The Midwest Roybal Center Pilot Competition is open to researchers and doctoral candidates studying health promotion and maintenance of health and functional abilities in older adults. Types of health promotion include exercise, diet, substance abuse, sleep, stress and participation in health screenings as well as risk factor reductions across multiple behaviors. A total of $100,000 is available to fund two to eight pilot projects. One-year awards of $15,000 to $50,000 will be made available.
The Midwest Roybal Doctoral Student Competition is open to doctoral candidates studying health promotion (exercise, diet, substance abuse, sleep, stress, health screenings), risk factors that enhance motivation for behavior change, and translation of evidenced-based programs into activities sustainable at the community level. A total of $10,000 is available to fund one or two pilot projects for doctoral candidates in public health, health and behavioral sciences who have completed preliminary examinations prior to the initiation of funding. Doctoral candidates may compete with all applicants in the pilot grant competition or with only doctoral students. Doctoral candidates cannot apply for both competitions. Mustanski Invited to Attend NIH Summer Institute on Behavioral Clinical Trials
Brian Mustanski, Ph.D., has been invited to attend the 7th annual NIH Summer Institute on the Design and Conduct of Randomized Clinical Trials Involving Behavioral Interventions. This two-week institute, funded by the NIH Office of Behavioral and Social Science Research, will take place near Washington. D.C. The application process was highly competitive, with only five behavioral scientists from around the nation were invited to attend.
Petty Elected Chair of College & University Professional Association for HR
The College and University Professional Association for Human Resources, Illinois Chapter (IL CUPA-HR) recently elected Lou Ester Petty, BS Ed., chair for 2006-2008. Ms. Petty presided over the Illinois CUPA-HR Spring Conference April 5-6 at the Holiday Inn Chicago Mart Plaza. Two More Walk-In Faculty Photograph Opportunities April 9 and 10
On Monday, April 9 from 5 to 6 p.m., and on Tuesday, April 10 from 7 to 10 a.m., two additional faculty photography opportunities will be offered. Clinicians’ images will be used in the medical center’s Find a Doctor site, https://secure1.hospital.uic.edu/doctors/phySc.do, and in the forthcoming Referring Physician Directory. All photos will be posted on an online gallery, and downloadable for other uses. Walk-in photo sessions will be in Conference Room 1135 of the Hospital, on both dates. There is no need to RSVP, just stop by for a brief sitting.
