Jacobs Receives NARSAD Young Investigators Awards
Suma Jacobs, M.D., last week received A NARSAD Young Investigators Award. The award was given to Dr. Jacobs for her work on the genetics of OCD and autism.
Fall Receives Fellowship to Study at Woods Hole Marine Biological Lab
Chris Fall, Ph.D., has been awarded a fellowship to travel to the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole (MA) Oceanographic Institution this summer with Anatomy and Cell Biology graduate student Ben Smith. They will study how dopamine and other neuromodulators affect Ca2+ release in the dendrites and spines of prefrontal cortical neurons using the laboratory’s multi-photon imaging equipment.
National Geographic’s Explorer Series to Air Struck by Lightning Next Week
“Struck by Lightning,” a documentary in the National Geographic Channel’s Explorer series, will air Wednesday, April 11 at 8 p.m., EDT, repeating at 11 p.m., that same night and re-airing Saturday April 14 at 7 p.m., EDT. Interviews with Neil Pliskin, Ph.D., and several other UIC faculty, including Mary Ann Cooper, M.D., in Emergency Medicine, were filmed during production of the documentary. Bell Joins NAS Committee on Prevention of Mental Disorders, Substance Abuse
Carl Bell, M.D., has been appointed to the National Academy of Science’s Committee on the Prevention of Mental Disorders and Substance Abuse Among Children, Youth, and Young Adults: Research Advances and Promising Interventions. The two-year term extends through March 2009.
Two More Walk-In Faculty Photograph Opportunities April 9 and 10
On Monday, April 9 from 5 to 6 p.m., and on Tuesday, April 10 from 7 to 10 a.m., two additional faculty photography opportunities will be offered. Clinicians’ images will be used in the medical center’s Find a Doctor site, https://secure1.hospital.uic.edu/doctors/phySc.do, and in the forthcoming Referring Physician Directory. All photos will be posted on an online gallery, and downloadable for other uses. Walk-in photo sessions be in Conference Room 1135 of the Hospital, on both dates. There is no need to RSVP, just stop by for a brief sitting.
Berent to Co-Chair Public Health Corrections Task Force R&D Subcommittee
Elizabeth Berent , MPH, MPIA, project director for our work in the juvenile detention center, last week was appointed co-chair of the Illinois Public Health and Corrections Task Force subcommittee on research and development. Her co-chair is Dr. Goldstein in UIC Public Health. The subcommittee is charged with establishing and sustaining productive and mutually beneficial relationships among researchers, correctional staff, and health practitioners in the field of Correctional healthcare services. The ultimate goal of these relationships is to pursue joint projects that will improve the quality and delivery of healthcare services in correctional institutions and community settings. Ms. Berent is funded through an NIH grant to Geri Donenberg, Ph.D., and state funding from the Illinois Department of Public Health to develop HIV programming in detention centers.
