MARCH 30 DEADLINE FOR NONTENURED FACULTY SEEKING PROMOTION
‘05-‘06 Child Fellows’ Research Paper Wins Jay Hirsch Memorial Award
A research paper written by the 2005-2006 class of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellows recently won a Jay Hirsch Memorial Award in a competition sponsored by the Illinois Council of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Their paper, entitled “The Use of Alpha-2 Agonists in a Population of State Wards Under Psychiatric Care,” will be presented at a meeting of the Illinois Council. Members of the class are Michelle Frank, MD; Barbara Twardowska, MD; Carolina Merida, MD; Semone West, MD; and Carlos Barrios, MD.
Renowned Journals Publish Davis, Colleagues’ Research on Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Research papers by John Davis, M.D., and colleagues recently were published in the British Journal of Psychiatry and The Lancet. The former article, “Omega-3 fatty acid supplementation in patients with recurrent self-harm,” by B Hallahan, J Hibbeln, Dr. Davis, and M Garland, was published in the Feb. 27 issue of the British Journal of Psychiatry, pages 118-122. The Lancet article, “Maternal seafood consumption in pregnancy and neurodevelopmental outcomes in childhood (ALSPAC study): an observational cohort study,” by J Hibbeln, Dr. Davis, C Steer, P Emmett, I Rogers, C Williams, and J Golding, was published Feb. 17. Findings reported in one of the articles were noted in a recent New York Times news article.
Pliskin to Address Association of Psychologists in Academic Health Centers in May
Neil Pliskin, Ph.D., will give an invited presentation at the annual conference of the Association of Psychologists in Academic Health Centers, to be held May 3 – 5 in Minneapolis. Today Show Features Carter’s Study of Voles and Bonding
Sue Carter, Ph.D., her work with voles and her study of the biochemistry of bonding recently were featured on the Today Show in a segment called “The Science of Love.” The piece aired on Feb. 21.
J Cook to Present Audio/Web Conference on Trauma, PTSD in Psychiatric Rehab
Judith Cook, Ph.D.; Jessica Jonikas, MA, and their community partners will present an audio/web conference on March 14 from 2 to3:30 p.m., focusing on assessing and addressing trauma among people with mental illnesses. Appropriate program and client assessments will be reviewed, along with key features of trauma-informed community services and self-care for service providers. Mar. 30 Deadline for Nontenured Faculty Seeking or Considering Promotion
Assistant Professors and Associate Professors on the nontenured Research, Clinical Discipline or the Clinical Track who are interested in applying for promotion this fall must meet with Dr. Dove and obtain his approval by March 30. The Psychiatry Department Intranet web page has links to important information, including deadlines, blank forms, norms for promotion, and a blank CV template. Candidates and junior faculty also should try to attend both workshops, Planning for Promotion/Tenure and Enhancing Your CV, and An Overview of the P/T Process (timing, deadlines, the forms, documentation, etc.). The workshop on Planning for P&T and Enhancing Your CV will be offered today, March 5, from 3 to 4 p.m., in PI Conference Room 568, and on Tues. March 6 from 12 to 1 p.m., in IJR Room 142.
