    Biological Psychology Special Edition Spotlights Porges’ Polyvagal Theory

    The current issue of Biological Psychology is a special issue dedicated to articles focusing on the polyvagal theory proposed by Stephen Porges, Ph.D. In an introductory article entitled “Cardiac vagal control, emotion, psychopathology, and health,” issue editors Andrea Chambers and John Allen of the University of Arizona, note that the theory has been cited in over 130 research articles. The polyvagal theory proposes that the vyelinated vagus is a dynamic contributor to the processes of attention, motion, emotion, and social interactions. The special edition is available online at www.sciencedirect.com.


    ACGME Accredits College of Medicine Graduate Program for 5 Years

    The Institutional Review Committee of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, in December 2006 continued accreditation for the UIC College of Medicine for a five year cycle, the maximum period. The letter summarizing the IRC findings stated, “The Review Committee commended the institution for its demonstrated substantial compliance with the ACGME's Institutional Requirements. The IRC also commended the Institution for allocating resources for the internal review process, for the quality of the reports themselves, and for the evidence of institutional oversight demonstrated in the reviews. The IRC recognized, in particular, the Director of Graduate Medical Education Programming (Geri Fox, M.D.), who leads the process for the Institution.” In separate news, Dr. Fox was awarded a Council for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) Curriculum and Instructional Grant to fund the next phase of her project, “Normal Development in Adolescence: A Longitudinal Observation in Stimulus Video DVD Format.”


    Four Psychiatry Faculty Members Recognized in UIC Medicine Faculty News

    The current issue of UIC Medicine, Winter 2007, features four Psychiatry faculty members in the Faculty News section on page 11. They are: Judith Cook, Ph.D.; Geri Donenberg, Ph.D.; Eileen Martin, Ph.D.; and Patrick Tolan, Ph.D.

    Dr. Cook was among a small group of experts invited to a meeting at the Institute of Medicine in Washington to discuss follow-up activities concerning the institute’s report on the “Quality Chasm in Behavioral Health Care.” Dr. also was appointed to an IOM committee reviewing compensation programs for veterans with PTSD. Dr. Donenberg was cited for receiving a Fulbright Scholarship to conduct a year of research in Africa. Dr. Martin was noted for her work as a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Clinical and Experimental Neuropsychology. Dr. Tolan was saluted as president-elect of the Division of Children, Youth, and Family within the APA, and as author of a new book, Preventing Youth Substance Abuse: Science Based Programs for Children and Adolescents.
