    FDA Unveils Post-Market Drug Safety and Surveillance Plans On Jan. 30, the FDA formally unveiled plans to improve post-market surveillance and drug safety. Among more than a dozen initiatives developed in response to a recent critical report by experts at the Institute of Medicine, the FDA will issue drug “report cards” detailing unexpected side effects that emerge within 18 months of a drug’s approval. Robert Gibbons, Ph.D., was a member of the IOM expert panel. News of the FDA’s new plans was covered by the Associated Press, the New York Times, Washington Post, USA Today, and MarketWatch.


    Autism Speaks Awards Research Grant to Porges
    Stephen Porges, Ph.D., recently received a grant from Autism Speaks. The title of the grant is “Social Emotional Behavior - A Neurobiological Approach.”


    Atkins Joins NIMH Scientific Advisory Committee on MH Services Research Marc Atkins, Ph.D., was invited to serve on the scientific advisory committee for the 2007 NIMH Mental Health Services Research Conference. As part of his duties, Dr. Atkins will chair a session at the meeting. In separate news, Dr. Atkins has assumed the role of Editor-in-Chief of the journal Child Care Youth Forum, produced by Springer Publications. Dr. Atkins is in discussion with the publishers to change the focus and name of the journal to reflect recent progress in closing the research-to-practice gap in children's services. The working title of the new journal is Children's Services: Research and Practice. The new name will likely be in place in early 2008.


    NIH Funds Pandey Study of Neurobiology of Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia Ghanshyam Pandey, Ph.D., recently was awarded a five-year NIH RO-1 grant to study the neurobiology of bipolar disorder and schizophrenia with direct costs of $1.25 million. Title of the study is “PI and Wnt Signaling in Postmortem Brain of Bipolar and Schizophrenia Subjects.” Dr. Pandey will focus the study on the role of phosphoinositide (PI) and Wnt signaling pathway in the postmortem brain obtained from subjects with schizophrenia and bipolar illness, as well as normal control subjects. Yogesh Dwivedi, Ph.D., is Co-Investigator on the grant.


    ABC World News Interviews Gibbons on Increase in Child Suicide Rate ABC World News last night broadcasted an interview with Robert Gibbons, Ph.D., concerning the increase in the suicide rate among children.
