Did you know that you can bill Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services (Medicaid) for screening for peripartum depression? Here is a helpful reference chart for billing Medicaid for peripartum depression screenings.

How to Bill Medicaid for Peripartum Depression Screening
Women’s Health Care Providers Pediatricians
Reimbursed as a “risk assessment” for women who are pregnant or within a year postpartum Reimbursed as a “risk assessment” for infants under age one
Use an HFS-approved screening tool:
  • Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Inventory
  • Beck Depression Inventory
  • Primary Care Evaluation of Mental Disorders Patient Health Questionnaire
Use an HFS-approved screening tool:
  • Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Inventory
  • Beck Depression Inventory
  • Primary Care Evaluation of Mental Disorders Patient Health Questionnaire
For pregnant women, use procedure code H1000 Record the screening as a risk assessment in the infant’s record. Maintain the results and copy of the screening instrument in a separate file or destroy or give to the mother.
For postpartum women, use procedure code 99420 with modifier HD under the woman’s Recipient Identification Number (RIN) Use procedure code 99420 with modifier HD under the infant’s Recipient Identification Number (RIN)
