PMHSR-WG
Investigators: Joseph
Flaherty, M.D., Jerome Richardson, Ph.D.
The
Program for Mental Health Services Research on Women and Gender, located
at University of Illinois at Chicagos Department of Psychiatry
supports research and research development in mental health services
and gender issues. Founded
in 1995, the Department of Psychiatry was awarded a Research Infrastructure
Support Program (RISP) grant from the National Institute of Mental Health.
The programs central objective is to articulate the diverse ways
in which gender status
and identity impact on womens and mens differential access
to and benefit from mental health services.
The Program promotes research examining the role of gender and issues
unique to women in mental health service access, usage, and outcome.
By bringing together a cadre of clinicians and investigators, the program
strives to address a variety of
gender-related issues in mental health service.
The Programs mission is to provide research support services and
training activities for the development of proposals for mental health
services research and scholarly writing on mental health services topics,
to facilitate faculty pilot work, and to
support grant development.
Goals of PMHSR-WG:
- Develop and nurture
a working alliance of clinicians and investigators who will examine
mental health services issues with a focus on women and gender
- Develop the financial
basis for continuing research beyond the length of the grant from
funds within the state and university systems and the private sector
- Positively influence
public policy through the knowledge gained by these investigations
and ultimately improve mental health services for men and women
