CHAMP

Investigator: Roberta Paikoff, Ph.D.

CHAMP is a series of projects aimed at:

  • Understanding for families keep their children safe and healthy and prevent HIV risk exposure
  • Using this information to work with families, schools, and communities to create, run and evaluate programs that support families keeping their children safe and healthy during the pre and early teen years.

The CHAMP Family Study began working with families in 6 Chicago Schools on the South and West sides in September, 1993. Several hundred families have participated in the program. Families who participated in 1993 have been re-contacted to find out how they have continued to keep their children safe and healthy into the teen years.

The CHAMP Family Program was first offered to 4th and 5th graders and their families on October, 1996. The program supports families’ efforts to keep their children safe. It is based on what families have told us in the past and on feedback from members of the CHAMP Collaborative Board.

CHAMP is funded by the National Institute of Mental Health Office and AIDS and by the William T. Grant Foundation

Funding for CHAMP was awarded to Roberta (Birdy) Paikoff at the Institute for Juvenile Research, Department of Psychiatry, University of Illinois at Chicago. The CHAMP Family Program is overseen by the Council and made up of parents and staff representatives from each school and university staff.

Schools that participate in CHAMP have so ONLY with the permission of their local school council. No families can be forced to participate in CHAMP. Schools give us permission to contact families.
