REQUIREMENTS
AND EXPECTATIONS
Professionalism and responsibility
important as a student and future physician
a. Dependability
- Be where you
are supposed to be when you are supposed to be there
- If you are
going to be late, call the resident waiting for you - EXAMPLE
- ON CALL AT UIH - BEEPER # 3927, ON CALL AT VA
- BEEPER # 1219; PAGE AT 4:30.
- CHECK YOU CALL
ASSIGENMENTS CAREFULLY.
Missing call
is grounds for failing. You can trade them but let our office
know and they are your responsibility - i.e., if you can't
get someone to trade with you will have to take the call.
- Illnesses/absences
- call your primary attending at let him/her know you are ill -
also call Birute 996-6219, any absences other than illness need to
be cleared by Dr.Blitzstein/Birute (312-996-6219) as far in advance as
possible
b. Professionalism
- if problems arise, address them ASAP. We may be able to help you
with it and we will certainly try. Dress professionally: white coat
and ties may depend on the service preference.
c. Clerkship days
- You are no longer required to be on call the Wednesday before the
exam, but you are required to be at your units until noon
on the last Thursday before your exam. If you don't show up you
may fail the rotation!
d. Patient care
- Act like the patient is YOUR patient (although ultimate responsibility lies with the resident and attending).
Don't get over or under involved. Do your write ups, notes and histories
and physicals in a timely manner. Clarify expectations.
e. Participate
in your education - Attend lectures/give feedback - we rely
on it. ASK for feedback, especially at the mid
point. Give feedback.
DON'T BE PASSIVE. Talk to Dr. Blitzstein if you can't get
enough information from primary supervisors or if there is a problem
that you need help with.
III. EVALUATION
There is an evaluation
form in your orientation packet. Look at it today. All faculty that
supervises you fill them out, and I compile all the grades and assign
them. If you get a "needs remediation" in any of the criteria
listed, you will be asked to remediate that area to a passing level
(remediation will be designed by your supervisor, Dr.Blitzstein, and
you). Your final clinical grade will be combined with
your shelf exam score in a 2/3 to 1/3 ratio to arrive at your final
clerkship grade.
