Junior Clerkship M-3
6 WEEK BASIC PSYCHIATRY CLERKSHIP The M-3 Psychiatry Clerkship is a required 6-week clerkship of the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Chicago. The student is assigned to one of the following sites: Community Mental Health Council The clerkship consists of clinical experience, a didactic lecture series and informal seminars and conferences. For the Clinical Experience, the student is assigned to a Psychiatry Service for 6 weeks. The students are expected to participate in all activities of the service. These activities may include daily inpatient care, partial hospital, consultation/liaison, office, clinical or other outpatient care, and may include work with children and adolescents. Teaching occurs during daily patient rounds, formal teaching rounds and in other informal teaching activities, as well as the didactic lecture series. The student will take Night Call according to a schedule devised for each site. The didactic lecture series takes place on Thursday afternoons and must be attended by students from all sites. Attendance at the lecture series is monitored. The lecture series is broad in scope but cannot include all subject matter upon which the student is likely to be tested. Supplemental independent reading and study is necessary to accumulate enough knowledge during the clerkship for a fulfilling experience and to pass the end of the clerkship NBME Shelf Examination. Finally, students are evaluated using a clinical evaluation process (evaluation at the clinical site, plus the standardized patient exam) (2/3 of the grade) and a NBME shelf exam (1/3 of the grade). The student must achieve a passing score in both components to successfully complete the clerkship. |
