Porges
Attends White House Signing of 'Investing in America's Future Act of
2002'
Stephen
Porges, Ph.D.,
was invited to attend a White House bill signing ceremony last Thursday,
Dec. 19, for the "Investing in America's Future Act of 2002."
The new law includes the NSF Authorization Act, which will effectively
double funding for the National Science Foundation over the next five
years. Dr. Porges was invited to the bill signing because he is President
of the Federation of Behavioral, Psychological and Cognitive Sciences,
a consortium of 17 scientific societies representing more than 16,000
scientists. The organization was instrumental in advocating support for
the bill within the Federation and among other scientific organizations
to inform Congress about the need for this legislation. The bill authorizes
an increase of 105 percent or $5.0 billion for the National Science Foundation
over the next five years, from $4.8 billion in FY 2002 to $9.8 billion
in FY 2007.
