News Dennis Grayson, Ph.D., recently received an NIH R01 grant award for $1.3 million over a five year period. The project, entitled, "The Regulation of the Reelin Gene," focuses on the epigenetic regulation of reelin through DNA methylation. Information obtained from the proposed experiments will provide the framework for formulating hypotheses relevant to mechanisms by which reelin expression may be functionally compromised in psychiatric disease. "We anticipate that an understanding of events responsible for modulating reelin expression may provide preliminary clues as to how the gene might be manipulated in the future as a potential therapeutic approach to these complex mental disorders," Dr. Grayson said.
