Article on Special Populations Published in Psychiatric Services

The current issue of Psychiatric Services includes an article by Carl Bell, M.D., and Johnny Williamson, M.D. Entitled "Articles on Special Populations Published in Psychiatric Services Between 1950 and 1999," the article reports on a survey of the journal's contents. The authors found that out of roughly 7,975 articles published in the 578 issues reviewed, and only 7 percent (555 articles) addressed special populations. Of those articles, more than two-thirds addressed mental health issues of the elderly (178 articles), and of children and adolescents (200 articles). Seven percent (38 articles) addressed women's issues. Twenty-two percent (120 articles) addressed one or more racial or ethnic groups: 36 articles were on African Americans, 21 addressed Latino issues, and 27 were multiculturally focused. Only two articles dealt with gay and/or lesbian mental health issues, and five focused on the mentally retarded population.
