Adults with Depressed Mood, Anxiety, or Worry Needed for a Research Study

Dr. K. Luan Phan (MD) at the University of Illinois at Chicago is conducting a research study on mood and anxiety. This study is testing to see how treatments affect brain function, physiology, behavior, and mental health. Participants will be randomized to receive either medication or talk therapy, both shown to be effective treatments. Participants should be 18-65 years old & experiencing anxiety, worry, and/or depression. We are looking for participants who do NOT have metal in their body. Participants will be asked to take part in a psychiatric interview, 4 sessions with electroencephalography (EEG) and 4 functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans to non-invasively measure brain function, and EITHER 12 weeks of treatment with a medication approved by the FDA for the treatment of mood and anxiety disorders, OR 12 weekly treatment visits with a talk therapy called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).  Participants will be randomized to receive either medication or therapy.  You will be compensated for your time ($15 per hour) and your parking will be paid.  If you would like to learn more about this study, please contact 888-686-5591 or email This email address is being protected from spambots. Ever wonder how your brain activity relates to your depression and/or anxiety?

Dr. Stewart Shankman is doing a non-treatment, non-medication research study at the University of Illinois at Chicago on how brain activity relates to emotion. Participants must be between the ages of 18 and 30, be right handed, and have a biological sibling in the Chicago area who may also be willing to participate in the study. The study is non-invasive.
