Hypothetical Examples



The examples below are sample programs, designed to provide ideas to students who may apply to our program.  These examples represent rotations that interns have done in the past.  Please keep in mind that available rotations and experiences change from year to year based on faculty availability and changes in ongoing projects.  Please see our current list of Specific Training Opportunities for experiences available during the upcoming internship year.   A student does not need to have the details of the program for his/her year articulated to apply, but does need to indicate a specific area of emphasis for the year.


Example 1:

Student is interested in a career in the neurosciences. He applies to the adult track, and develops the program below for his internship year.

12 month Clinical Research project focusing on Addiction Neuroscience – 20% time
12 month Clinical Practice Placement in Adult Neuropsychology – 20% time
6 month Clinical-Geropsych – 20% 6 month Research – Electrical Injury – 20%
6 month Clinical rotation – Health Psych – 20% 6 month Clinical Research Rotation – HIV and addiction – 20%

Seminars/Clinical Conferences (20% entire year): Behavioral Neuroscience Series; Neuropathology Rounds; Neuroradiology Rounds; Health psychology seminar; Core seminars.


Example 2:

Student has a strong interest in psychopathology in adults. She applies to the adult track. Note that the concentration she develops also contains several experiences offered by the child track.

12 month Clinical Research project focusing on Affective Disorders & Schizophrenia – 20% time
12 month clinical rotation in mood & anxiety – 20% time
6 month Clinical rotation – Childhood Anxiety Disorders Clinic - 20% 6 month Research – Stress & Anxiety - 20%
12 month Pediatric Mood disorders – 20%

Seminars/Clinical Conferences (20% entire year): Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy; Stress and anxiety disorders clinic staffing; Medication management staffing; Seminar on severe psychopathology; Seminar on Psychopharmacology for severe mental illness; Core seminars.


Example 3:

Student has a strong interest in school-based intervention. He applies to the child track and develops the program below. Note that his clinical placement complements his clinical/research interests.


12 month Clinical Research project in School Based Mental Health Services Research – 20% time
12 month Clinical placement in Disruptive Behavior Disorders Clinic – 20% time
6 month Clinical rotation – Child Anxiety Disorders Clinic – 20% time 6 month clinical – Peds mood – 20% time
12 months clinical-research Youth trauma clinic – 20%

Seminars/Clinical Conferences (20% entire year): Prevention and Intervention in Schools and Communities; Medical Problems Staffing; Multidisciplinary Team Conference; Behavioral Neuroscience Series; Core seminars.


Example 4:

Student is interested in pursuing a career in health psychology. She applies to the adult track, and develops the program below.


12 month Clinical Research - Bariatric surgery – 20% time
12 month Clinical Practice Placement in Inpatient Health Psychology – 20% time
6 month clinical research SPEAC – 20% 6 month Clinical Research Adult Anxiety – 20%
6 month Clinical rotation – Adult neuropsychology – 20% 6 month Research Rotation – Stem Cell Donation – 20%

Seminars/Clinical Conferences (20% entire year): Health Psychology seminar; Stem cell transplant rounds; Inpatient rehab staffing; Core seminars.


Example 5:

Student is interested in a career in prevention research, with specific interests in child/adolescent health behavior. Note that the program she develops includes experiences in adult rotations.


12 month Clinical Research project focusing on HIV Prevention Clinic – 20%
12 month Clinical-Research Placement in GIRLTALK  -20%
6 month Clinical Research in HIV Prevention – Day School – 20% 6 month Clinical Research in Longitudinal HIV Risk Exposure – 20%

Example 6:

Student is interested in mental health services research, with a specific interest in internalizing disorders in children. She designs the following program, which includes clinical and research experiences with internalizing disorders in children and adults.


12 month Clinical Research project focusing on School Based Mental Health Services Research – 20% time
12 month Clinical Practice Placement in Pediatric Stress & Anxiety Disorders Clinic – 20%
6 month Clinical Research Rotation in CHAMP – 20% 6 month Clinical Research in Childhood Bipolar Disorders Clinic – 20%
