Award: Bell Awarded APA’s Solomon Carter Fuller Award Carl C. Bell, MD was presented the Solomon Carter Fuller Award by the Council on Minority Mental Health and Health Disparities of the American Psychiatric Association on October 27, 2011 at San Francisco, CA. The award is presented for “demonstrating the qualities of scholarship and community leadership so emphasized by America’s first Black psychiatrist, and for the forthright furtherance of the mental health of Black people.” Dr. Bell also gave the Solomon Carter Fuller Award Lecture entitled, “Public Health Efforts: Successes and Failures.”

Presentations: Stein Presents at Pediatric Sleep Medicine Conference and ADHD Support Group Mark Stein, PhD, ABPP presented on the “Effects of ADHD Treatments on Sleep” at the 6th Pediatric Sleep Medicine Conference on October 29, 2011 in Amelia Island, Florida. Dr. Stein also spoke to the Northwest Suburban Adult ADHD Support Group in Naperville, Illinois on November 1, 2011.
Presentation: Grayson Presents at Children’s Memorial On Tuesday, November 1, 2011, Dennis Grayson, PhD gave a lecture entitled, “The Epigenetic Regulation of Reelin and Gad67” to the research community at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Illinois.

UIC College of Medicine 2011 Research Forum UIC College of Medicine is hosting their 2011 Research Forum on Friday, November 11, 9 am – 4 pm at the Student Center West, 828 S. Wolcott, 2nd Floor Conference Rooms. All trainees and other COM investigators have been invited to present posters on their biomedical research of all types, from basic to clinical to community. The program will include Poster Session I with prize competition (9 am – 12), Open Poster Session with lunch for participants (12-1 pm) and Poster Session II with prize competition (1-4 pm).

Molecular and Developmental Neuroscience Faculty – University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) Department of Psychiatry We are seeking an enthusiastic, well-trained molecular/cellular neurobiologist with an interest in the developing nervous system. The Department of Psychiatry brings together scientists and clinicians from different disciplines and departments who study neural and behavioral processes and how these relate to the etiology and treatment of psychiatric illness, including neurodevelopmental disorders. UIC is a research intensive university that boasts a rich and interdisciplinary neuroscience community within a vibrant, cosmopolitan, city that offers a rich and varied academic environment.
Faculty will be expected to oversee an active competitively-funded research program in the general area of cell and molecular neuroscience pertinent to the nervous system, especially the developing nervous system. Faculty will train graduate students (Ph.D and M.D/Ph.D) in neuroscience in the classroom and as a dissertation advisor and will have opportunities to teach medical students and psychiatry residents. The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. and/or M.D. or equivalent degree in a relevant area of biomedical sciences and be an established investigator with a track record of active funding. Teaching experience is highly desirable. Rank/tenure is commensurate with qualifications. Joint appointment in a suitable basic science department is an option. Faculty – University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) Department of Psychiatry The Department of Psychiatry at the University of Illinois at Chicago is expanding and is looking to fill four (4) full time non-tenured faculty positions in the Clinician-Educator track at the Assistant Professor level. As one of the largest Psychiatry departments in the Midwest, with 125 faculty, an excellent General Psychiatry Residency Training Program and several fellowships, including a nationally known Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Residency and Addictions and Women’s Mental Health fellowships. Our Department has a large and varied portfolio of research grants and contracts, which is only second to the Dept. of Medicine at UIC. We have a strong commitment to providing health care to the underserved populations in Chicago and are well positioned to participate in many new and exciting developments in the area of mental health and behavior.
Of the four faculty positions, three (3) will be in General Psychiatry with two of those positions in the Mood and Anxiety Program and one in the Psychosis Program. The General Psychiatry positions will have both outpatient and some inpatient duties and may include supervision of the ER, depending on candidate preference, as well as teaching and supervision of residents and medical students. The fourth position is in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. The Child and Adolescent position will be exclusively outpatient and involve teaching and supervision of child and adolescent residents, general residents and medical students.
The successful candidate will have an MD or MD/Ph.D., eligible or Board Certified in Psychiatry and eligible or licensed in Illinois. Training, teaching, and familiarity with hospital/clinic day-to-day operations are desirable.
