A Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Trial of Stellate Ganglion Block in the Treatment of Hot Flashes

Hot flashes are the most common symptom associated with menopause and have been shown to have a significant impact on sleep quality, quality of life, and memory function. Hormone therapy has been shown to be an effective treatment for hot flash relief, but few alternative treatments are available. The specific aim of this investigation is to evaluate the effectiveness of stellate ganglion injection with anesthesia on the relief of subjective and objective hot flashes in menopausal women. Mental abilities, sleep patterns, sexual functioning, mood, and overall quality of life will also be evaluated. Northwestern University and UIC are teaming up to investigate this issue. We are currently recruiting women between the ages of 30 and 65 who are experiencing moderate-to-severe hot flashes.

If you are interested in participating, please contact the research coordinator at Northwestern University by phone at (312) 926-4089. At that time, the research coordinator will explain to you more details about the study and will have a short series of questions to ask to determine your eligibility.
