Maria T. Caserta, MD,PhD
Professor of Clinical Psychiatry Medical Director of the Inpatient Unit
Dr. Caserta is board certified in Adult Psychiatry as well as Geriatric Psychiatry and recently joined the faculty at UIC as Medical Director of Inpatient Psychiatry after being Director of Geriatric Psychiatry and the Geriatric Psychiatry training program at USF in Tampa. She received her PhD from Cornell University Graduate School of Medical Sciences and her MD from the Medical College of PA and completed her Psychiatry residency at John Hopkins Hospital . She also did research fellowships at the NIH and in Lausanne, Switzerland. Her research interests have focused on developing animal models of neuropsychiatric disorders and more recently on using quantitative imaging techniques to aid in the early diagnosis of dementing illnesses, primarily, Alzheimer’s Disease. She has received numerous awards for her teaching and mentoring of medical students and Psychiatry residents at Northwestern and the University of Chicago, where she was on faculty, and has had a Career Development Award in Geriatric Mental Health from the NIMH.
Interests:
Neuropsychiatric disorders in the elderly; Mood disorders in mid and late life ; Brain imaging techniques ; teaching and mentoring of Psychiatry residents and medical students.
