Dr. Pandey is Professor of Pharmacology in the Department of Psychiatry since 1981 and is Director of Mood Disorders and Suicide Research Program. His main research interests are in the neurobiology of mood disorders (bipolar illness and depression), schizophrenia and suicide. Dr. Pandey is nationally and internationally renowned expert on biochemical abnormalities associated with mood disorders and suicide. In Order to examine these neurobiological abnormalities, Dr. Pandey has been studying the role of monoamine receptors and receptor-linked signaling systems in the postmortem brain obtained from teenage and adult suicide victims and age-matched normal control subjects. In addition, Dr. Pandey has also studied these biochemical measures in peripheral cells, such as platelets and lymphocytes, obtained from patients before and after treatment with psychoactive medications and from normal control patients. He has been particularly interested in examining the role of serotonergic mechanisms, studying primarily serotonin2A receptor subtype in these tissues. He also studied various components of the phosphoinositide (PI) and adenylyl cyclase (AC) signaling systems and their components, such as G proteins, phosphorylating enzymes, protein kinase C (PKC), protein kinase A (PKA), phospholipase C (PLC), transcription factors such as CREB and neurotrophins such as BDNF in the postmortem brain of suicide victims and platelets and lymphocytes of patients with mood disorders. These studies indicated that serotonin receptors are abnormally high in postmortem brain of suicide victims and there appear to be changes in the expression of PKC, PKA, PLC, CREB and BDNF in subjects with suicidal behavior.

These ongoing studies, supported by several NIMH grants, help in elucidating the biological abnormalities associated with mood disorders and suicide and in addition identify specific abnormal sites in brains of subjects which may help in developing therapeutic agents targeting these particular sites. Also, these studies may not only result in early identification of suicidal patients but may also help in initiating treatment to prevent suicide. Dr. Pandey has presented his work in numerous national and international meetings and published his findings in high-impact journals.

Dr. Pandey served as principal investigator on many NIMH studies. He is a highly published author in hundreds of medical and scientific journals and has served on editorial boards of several publications, and on grant reviewing committees. 

Dr. Pandey is the recipient of the following awards:

  • Researcher of the Year Award (awarded for his contribution to the understanding of the neurobiology of suicide) from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, 2010
  • Bachawat Memorial Lifetime Achievement Award in Neuroscience from the Indian Academy of Neurosciences, 2010.
  • UIC Researcher of the Year Award for the Clinical Sciences, 2010
  • Science Congress President Gold Medal for excellence in Scientific Research presented by the Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, at the 98th Indian Science Congress, held at the SRM University in Chennai, India, 2011
