Patrick H. Tolan, Ph.D., is Director
of the Institute for Juvenile
Research, and Professor in the
Department of Psychiatry at the
University of Illinois at Chicago. He
earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree at
Temple University, and a Master of
Arts and a Doctoral Degree from the
University of Tennessee. He completed
a post-doctoral fellowship at the
University of Chicago in Clinical
Research on Adolescence. Dr. Tolan's
major interests include development of
urban children and families from a
developmental-ecological perspective;
prediction and prevention of
antisocial and violent behavior;
family systems theory; adolescence;
and prevention and evaluation
methodology. He is a licensed Clinical
Psychologist and Certified School
Psychologist in Illinois and an AAMFT
certified supervisor for family
therapy training. Dr. Tolan is an
internationally recognized authority
on violence, adolescence, families,
and prevention. He holds positions on
several national and international
boards and committees. Some current
positions held by Dr. Tolan include
Evaluation Director for the MacArthur
Foundation's Cook County Juvenile
Court Clinical Evaluation Services
Initiative; Board Member of Illinois
Council for the Prevention of
Violence; Advisory Board Member for
the Center for the Study and
Prevention of Youth Violence's Program
on Blueprints for Violence
Prevention/Reduction and the Oversight
Committee for the UIC Neighborhoods
Initiative Evaluation. He also
collaborates with others on community
action initiatives such as the
Attorney General's Safe to Learn
Initiative and the Chicago Project for
Violence Prevention. He has an
extensive background in education,
publishing and research and is author
or co-author of more than 80 books,
monographs, chapters, articles and
technical reports. He is a fellow of
three divisions of the American Psychological Association and of the
International Society for Research on
Aggression. He is also a fellow of the
UIC Great Cities Institute. He is a
regular consultant to the National
Institute of Mental Health, the
Substance Abuse and Mental Health
Administration, the W.T. Grant
Foundation, and several other federal
and state agencies and private
foundations. He is the principal
investigator on three currently funded
federal grants and the co-investigator
on 4 others.
