Dr. Surinder Nand is a Professor of Clinical Psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She currently serves as the Director of the Mental Health Service Line at Jesse Brown VA Medical Center. After Dr. Nand received her medical training in India, she completed her psychiatry residency training at the Illlinois State Psychiatric Institute. She joined the VA West Side Medical Center as a staff psychiatrist on an acute inpatient unit, and later was appointed Chief, Day Programs. In 1991, she was appointed Director, Psychiatry Residency Training Program at the University of Illinois. In 1995 she was selected as the Chief, Psychiatry Service at VA West Side. She is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and has been active with the Illinois Psychiatric Society (IPS) for many years serving on the Chronic Care Committee, Public Affairs Committee and Ethics Committee. At present she is the President-Elect of the IPS. She is a member of the Asian-American Psychiatrists Caucus of the APA. She is a member of The American College of Psychiatrists serving as a member of the Committee on Membership. She is involved in teaching, administration and clinical work. She volunteers her time for issues related to homelessness and domestic violence and believes strongly that mental health leaders must be advocates for the mentally ill and be in the forefront to dispel the stigma of mental illness.
