Dr. Mustanski received his doctorate in Psychology from Indiana University, where he trained extensively at the Kinsey Institute. He has been the Principal Investigator for multiple National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, and other foundation research and training awards, including being named a William T. Grant Foundation Scholar. The majority of his research focuses on the health and development of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth. Dr. Mustanski is currently conducting a longitudinal study of sexual minority adolescents in order to more fully understand the development of sexual orientation and identify factors that promote resilience. The project is funded by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. In addition, he conducts applied research on HIV prevention among young men who have sex with men (MSM). He is the PI of an NIMH-funded study to develop and test an online HIV prevention program for young MSM (R34 MH079714) and co-investigator on a group-based HIV prevention program (R34 MH079707; PI: R. Garofalo). His Scholars Award from the W.T. Grant Foundation focuses on the Internet as a setting for the sexual health development of LGBT youth and includes qualitative, quantitative, and intervention components. Much of his research in this area is conducted in partnership with community-based organizations that serve the LGBT community.

Dr. Mustanski also conducts research in the area of psychiatry and behavioral genetics. In 2005 he co-authored the first genome scan of male sexual orientation and he is currently the PI of a natural experiment to study gene-environment interaction related to a cluster of health risk behaviors (1R01DA025039).

Dr. Mustanski is a licensed Clinical Psychologist with a focus on the treatment of sexual and relationship problems.
